Fabrizio Bosso Quartet – STATE OF THE ART
Fabrizio Bosso’s “State of the Art” project, with pianist Julian Oliver Mazzariello, double bassist Jacopo Ferrazza and drummer Nicola Angelucci, continues to evolve in an authentic, powerful and highly expressive dialogue.
The sublimation of a musical and personal path that sanctions its success. Fabrizio Bosso, in continuous interaction with the members of his quartet, with whom he has been sharing the stage for several years now, explores the boundless possibilities of his own music-making, thereby achieving his most accomplished and mature artistic expression, both as a musician and a composer. “State of the Art” is not a point of arrival but a new departure, which each time round is consummated and renewed. On stage, the trumpeter showcases his outstanding qualities as bandleader, leaving plenty of space for the other musicians to express their own creativity and personalities. Along with dazzling revisitations of jazz standards and virtuosic improvisations, the quartet’s repertoire also features Bosso’s masterly compositions in pieces like Rumba For Kampei, Mapa, Black Spirit, Dizzy’s Blues or Minor Mood.
“When I decided to form this quartet, I didn’t do it with a recording in mind. What I actually wanted, was to hear other musicians perform my music with a different verve, a fresher ‘colour’. The quartet’s sound is my present sound,” says Bosso, “and these musicians, in addition to being friends, are those who inspire me most when we perform together, as they know how to bring out the sound I have in mind. With them on stage I could even go so far as to not play and the music would work all the same!”
“State of the Art” is also the title of a double album released on Warner Music in April 2017, a live recording that captured the most memorable moments of the quartet’s 2016 international tour, yet over time each of Fabrizio Bosso’s concerts with his fellow band members tells of a renewed “state of the art”, continually enriched with new ideas and a fresh energy.
