After his successful and rewarding homage to Duke Ellington, Fabrizio Bosso’s new project pays tribute to another jazz icon, Dizzy Gillespie, the greatest trumpet player of the bebop era and one of the most important trumpeters of all time!
For his tribute to Dizzy, Bosso felt that that an orchestra, rather than a smaller ensemble, would suit the project best. Indeed Gillespie gigged with orchestras that contributed to shaping jazz history, namely Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Earl Hines, Billy Eckstine, before founding his own successful big bands.
As was the case for his project “Duke”, Bosso entrusted the arrangements and direction to Paolo Silvestri, a renowned jazz orchestrator. The instrumentation is substantially the same as in “Duke”, but with the addition of supplemental horns.
Bosso’s artistic partnership with Silvestri is a steady and regular one, initiated more than ten years ago with Fabrizio Bosso’s first “fundamental” recording “You’ve Changed”, released on Blue Note in 2007.
